Medals at Bristol Invitational
Mar 8, 2010, 5:52 pm

Harefield Gymnastics Academy fielded one of its biggest teams in recent months for the first competition of the season. The Bristol Invitational has become a prestigious addition to the acrobatic gymnastics calendar in recent years, and an important one ahead of both regional and national competitions.

Both the club's junior and senior squads travelled to Bristol for a weekend of competition against the country's top clubs, some as far as Yorkshire and Tyneside.

The junior squad was over 20 strong, with gymnasts as young as seven competing, some for the first time. In the Grade One Women’s Pairs, Harefield had four partnerships competing against each other. Michaela Cook and Jessica Keys took away the silver medal, with the other partnerships finishing in the top half of the field.

Jessica Gordon-Brown, from Harefield, and her partner Georgia Baker performed their Grade 2 routine to win the gold medal, a positive win ahead of the year’s competitions.  Ryan Bartlett, who attends The Harefield Academy and Ellis Jacobson also took gold in the mixed pair category.  James, another Academy student, and his partner Johnny Walsh came home with silver.

The Junior Squad coaches, Keri Llewellyn and Sarah Robertson, both Harefield residents were pleased with the result. Sarah said: “It’s good to see some of the younger gymnasts starting their career on a good foot,” Keri added, “there is a lot of talent at The Academy, and with more hard work, these gymnasts could really prove themselves over the coming months and years.”

In the Senior Elite Squad, the Great Britain squad members, Claire Louise Thompson, Grace Blacklock and Robyn Birch proved their talent at the top by taking the Gold medal in the Senior Womens Groups.  The club’s Senior Womens Pair, Poppy and Olivia competed together for the first time and came away with silver, after tough competition from the current British Champions.  Connor Bartlett, a Harefield Academy student, and his partner Millie Spalding confirmed the club’s ever developing talent by taking Gold in the Age Group mixed pairs.

Solid performances across the whole club prove the strength of Harefield Gymnastics Academy, and give a good indication of the medals they can expect in the coming year. The next big competitions in March will be another chance for the gymnasts to shine. Head Coach Natasha Maxwell said: “It is so positive to see so many of our gymnasts winning medals at National competitions, from our seven year olds, to our senior gymnasts. The club is starting to show it’s strengths in all disciplines,” she added, “we are now working hard for the rest of the season’s competitions.”

Dec 1, 2009, 7:31 am

Two partnerships competed at the British Tournament in November.  Both achieved medal placings.  Claire, Grace and Robyn were in first place going into the finals in the senior category and beat their opposition in the finals by two marks.

Connor and Millie competed in the 11-16 category. They were ahead of the current European Champions by 0.2 going into the finals. Connor was the youngest base by three years!  They performed an outstanding finals routine with a score of 28.75 but were just pipped into second place.

Laura and Rachael competed one routine as guests as Laura has just come back to full training after a series of injuries.  They performed an excellent routine and will be using this experinece ready for next year's events.

Senior Harefield Gymnasts Perform at the O2
Nov 5, 2009, 10:33 am

Three of our senior gymnasts, Robyn Birch, Claire-Louise Thompson and Grace Blacklock,  got the chance to perform in front of television cameras and the World’s press at the 02 Arena in London this month.

The trio have recently returned from the Acrobatic Gymnastics European Championships, held in Portugal earlier this month.
As part of the Great Britain team, the girls were asked to showcase Acrobatic Gymnastics at the prestigious World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, alongside the likes of Beth Tweddle, who became World Floor Champion at the event.
The girls highlighted the excellent standard of Acrobatic Gymnastics being produced across Great Britain, as well as drawing attention to the continuing success of the Sporting Excellence programme at The Harefield Academy where Robyn is in year 11 and Claire and Grace are employees.
The routine was performed beautifully, and the World’s press were left amazed by their spectacular skills, along with the 10,000 plus spectators in the 02 Arena who applauded every skill.

Our squad gymnasts are returning to the Harlequin on Monday 31st August, for a special Bank Holiday display.

The British Champion gymnasts will be performing their medal-winning routines for shoppers throughout the day, along with specially choreographed acrobatic displays every hour.

Taking part will be our club's senior Women’s Group who have been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Championships in Portugal in September as well as our many medal winning gymnasts.

The gymnasts will be raising money to help fund travel to international events in Bulgaria, Portugal and America as well as for new equipment.
We will also be promoting our general gymnastics classes throughout the day, a chance for anyone to find out more about starting gymnastics with the club. Our coaches and parents will be on hand all day to answer any questions and to register new budding-gymnasts.

The displays will certainly amaze shoppers, with a spectacular display combining balance, agility and strength; you won't want to miss it!

See the champion gymnasts on the Lower Mall outside HMV on Monday 31st of August.
